Child support is designed to ensure that the financial needs of a couple’s minor children are being met. Child support payments typically last until the youngest turns 18 and graduates high school, but may continue for “adult” children who are classified as incapacitated and/or disabled by the Court.
California has a statewide guideline for calculating child support using a standard formula based on after-tax monthly income of the parents and the amount of time each parent has physical custody of the minor children. This child support calculator is referred to as the Dissomaster Program, and is the official calculator used by all family law judges in California.
